Water, not weight, is what destroys most concrete in southeastern Wisconsin. A slab that sheds water cleanly can outlive its owner, and a slab that holds a puddle will crack, lift, and spall within a decade.
That is worth saying this week, because water management in Kenosha County just moved up a level.
The county took a seat at the water and land use table
On August 31, 2026, Kenosha County Executive Samantha Kerkman was appointed to five National Association of Counties bodies. Among them are the Environment, Energy and Land Use Policy Committee and the Great Lakes Regional Forum, according to the county's own announcement.
That committee's stated scope covers water resources and management, coastal management, and land use. Kerkman pointed to the county's position between urban and rural regions as the reason those assignments matter here.
Strip out the policy vocabulary and you are left with a homeowner problem. Every hard surface you add changes where rain goes, and in a county that drains toward Lake Michigan through flat clay soil, that path is short and unforgiving.
Every slab you pour is a drainage decision
A driveway is roughly 600 to 900 square feet of surface that no longer absorbs anything. All of that water has to leave somewhere.
Done right, it leaves toward the street or a swale and you never think about it. Done wrong, it collects at the garage apron, soaks the soil against your foundation wall, or dumps onto a neighbor's lot.
This is why we talk about slope before we talk about finish. A properly graded driveway is not a luxury detail, it is the single cheapest insurance you can buy against freeze damage.
The standard most contractors work to
General practice is roughly a quarter inch of fall per foot of run, pitched away from the house. On a 20 foot approach that is about five inches of drop.
Homes in older Kenosha neighborhoods and in Somers often sit on lots that have been regraded twice since the original pour. The old slope no longer matches the current yard, which is how a driveway that worked in 1994 starts pooling in 2026.

None of these are cosmetic complaints. Each one is water telling you it has nowhere good to go.
Freeze and thaw does the actual damage
Wisconsin winters run concrete through repeated freezing and thawing. Water that sits in a low spot or wicks into the pore structure expands when it freezes, and that pressure works from the inside out.
Add road salt tracked in from I-94 and the surface layer takes the worst of it. That combination is why a slab in Pleasant Prairie can look fine in October and show flaking by April.
Catching it early is far cheaper. Small cracks and surface damage often respond to targeted repair work, while a slab with a failed base under it is throwing good money after bad.
Grade changes need something holding them
Plenty of lots in Bristol, Salem, and around Twin Lakes and Silver Lake have real elevation change. Water moving down that slope carries soil with it, and once the soil under a patio or walk starts moving, the concrete follows.
A retaining wall built with proper backfill and drainage stops that. The wall itself gets the attention, but the gravel and drain tile behind it are what keep it standing.
The same logic applies to walkways and connecting paths. A path that cuts across a slope becomes a dam if you pour it flat.
Fall is the honest deadline
Concrete needs reasonable temperatures to cure well, which means the practical pouring window in Kenosha closes sometime in November most years. Repair work has a similar limit.
