If your cracks are under a quarter inch wide, the slab sits level, and the surface still sheds water, repair is the right call. If sections have settled, cracks run wider than half an inch, or the surface has crumbled down to exposed aggregate across large areas, replacement is the only fix that lasts.
Everything else falls somewhere in between, and the deciding factor is almost always what is happening under the slab rather than what you see on top.
Read the Cracks First
Crack width and behavior tell you more than crack count. A driveway with twenty hairline cracks is often healthier than one with a single wide crack that has shifted vertically.

The uneven edge detail matters most. When one side of a crack sits higher than the other, the soil beneath has moved and no surface patch will hold.
That vertical displacement is a base problem, and base problems come back every spring until the slab is rebuilt.
Why Kenosha Driveways Crack Faster
Southeastern Wisconsin runs through dozens of freeze and thaw cycles between November and April. Water gets into a crack, freezes, expands, and widens it a fraction of a millimeter each time.
Add road salt tracked in from Sheridan Road and Highway 50, and the surface paste starts breaking down from chemical attack on top of the mechanical stress.
Clay soil across much of Kenosha County holds water rather than draining it. A driveway built on poorly compacted clay will move seasonally no matter how good the concrete was.
What Repair Actually Covers
Repair works when the structure is sound and the problem is cosmetic or contained. The common approaches:
- Crack sealing: routing the crack to a clean channel and filling with flexible polyurethane or epoxy
- Slab jacking: pumping polyurethane foam or grout under a settled section to lift it back to grade
- Partial replacement: saw cutting and repouring one or two failed panels while leaving the rest
- Resurfacing: bonding a thin overlay over a structurally sound but ugly surface
Slab jacking is underused around here. A section that has sunk an inch at the garage apron can often be lifted for a fraction of replacement cost, as long as the slab itself has not fractured into pieces.

The Limits of Resurfacing
Resurfacing gets sold as a cheap alternative to replacement more often than it should be. An overlay is typically a quarter inch to half an inch thick and it inherits every flaw beneath it.
If the base moves, the overlay cracks in the same places within two seasons. If the existing surface is spalling and loose, the bond fails and the overlay delaminates in sheets.
Resurfacing makes sense on one specific driveway: structurally sound, no settlement, minor surface wear, and you want it to look new. Outside those conditions it buys two or three years, not twenty.

Run the math over time rather than at the moment of purchase. Spending $2,500 on repairs to a driveway that needs replacing in four years costs more than replacing it now.

The 30 Percent Rule
A practical threshold: when more than 30 percent of the driveway surface shows structural damage, replacement usually costs less than staged repairs.
Below that, targeted fixes make sense. Above it, you are repairing the same driveway repeatedly while the untouched sections fail on their own schedule.
Age matters too. Concrete poured before 1990 was often placed at three or four inches over minimal base preparation, and modern driveway installation uses thicker slabs, compacted aggregate base, and control joint spacing that accounts for our climate.
When Replacement Is the Only Answer
Replace the driveway when any of these are true:
- Multiple sections have settled at different rates
- Widespread spalling has exposed aggregate across the surface
- Cracks reappear within a year of every repair
- Water pools against the foundation because the pitch has reversed
- The slab has broken into more than five or six independent pieces
The drainage one deserves attention. A driveway that has settled toward the house is moving water into your basement every time it rains, and that turns a surface problem into a foundation issue that costs far more to resolve.
Replacement also opens options that repair cannot. If you are tearing out anyway, upgrading to a decorative finish or adding embedded heating elements costs less during a pour than as a retrofit.
